Governor Kim Reynolds orders flags to half-staff in honor and remembrance of Norman Borlaug Elementary School fifth-grade teacher Hannah Jorgensen and student Ahmed Osman, who died on September 22, 2026, during a field trip at Lake Macbride. The order reflects grief for the Borlaug Elementary School community and the Iowa City School District after the tragedy.

Flags are to remain at half-staff statewide effective immediately through sunset on Monday, September 28, 2026. The order covers the State Capitol Building, flag displays in the Capitol Complex, and all public buildings, grounds, and facilities throughout Iowa.

Individuals, businesses, schools, municipalities, counties, and other government subdivisions are encouraged to lower flags for the same period as a sign of respect.
