President Trump orders flags to half-staff in honor of Dolly Parton

President Donald Trump ordered American flags throughout the United States lowered to half-staff for one week beginning at 6:00 p.m. on Tuesday, August 25, 2026, following the death of country music icon Dolly Parton. The weeklong tribute is expected to conclude at 6:00 p.m. on September 1.

Parton died peacefully in Nashville at the age of 80. Her career spanned more than six decades and included enduring songs such as “Jolene,” “Coat of Many Colors,” “9 to 5,” and “I Will Always Love You.” Beyond her achievements as a singer, songwriter, actor, and businesswoman, she was widely recognized for her philanthropy and advocacy for children’s literacy.

Through Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library, millions of books have been provided to children, including families throughout West Virginia. Governor Patrick Morrisey said Parton’s generosity helped generations of West Virginia children discover the joy of reading and imagine a brighter future.

The presidential order applies nationwide. West Virginia also confirmed that it would lower flags in Parton’s honor beginning August 26.
