Governor Mills orders flags to half-staff for September 11 remembrance

Governor Janet T. Mills has ordered the United States and State of Maine flags lowered from sunrise to sunset on Friday, September 11, 2026, to honor the victims and survivors of the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks. The observance marks the anniversary of the attacks and remembers the nearly 3,000 people killed that day, including six individuals from Maine, along with those who later died from the aftereffects.

The remembrance also recognizes the families who lost loved ones and the survivors who continue to live with the impact of that day. It pays tribute to the first responders who rushed toward danger and the men and women who enlisted in the U.S. Armed Forces to help bring justice to those responsible.

The order applies statewide in Maine and covers the United States and State of Maine flags. The flags are to remain lowered during the full sunrise-to-sunset window on Friday, September 11, 2026.
